Mistress of Copper Mountain
Mistress of Copper Mountain - is a beloved character from Russian folklore, a mythical female entity, who appears as a beautiful enchantress or as a crowned lizard. She is the Queen of the underground reign, the protector of gems and stones in the Urals, who capriciously bestows the ability to find such treasures only on those who please her.
She is described as a dark-haired green-eyed beauty, wearing a dress which looks like it is made out of malachite stone. Sometimes she is followed by little lizards:
"...Stepan noticed what appeared to be hundreds of lizards all around him - of different colors, green, bluish, brown ones with gold spots. “Don’t step on them!” The strange woman warned, “They are my brothers and sisters. Look how big and heavy you are and they are small”. Stepan couldn't move until she clapped her hands and the lizards went away.."
Mistress became famous from the book "The Malachite Casket" by Bazhov, who collected and wrote down folklore tales of miners from the Ural Mountains. The Urals is a large mountain chain on the border between Europe and Asia and is famous as a source of precious stones and metals, including gold, copper ores and malachite stone.
